For our Planet. For our Future.
Sustainability for our ʻāina, our island home, our Earth, is of top importance to Asana Hawai’i. It’s the only home we got, and we need desperately to take care of it. So, we’re getting greener every step of the way, while still providing you the quality products that keep up with all you do.
Around 85% of all textiles produced by the fashion industry end up in landfills, making it a major contributor to environmental damage. What’s more, one in every five items produced by the fashion industry reach landfills without being worn even once.
Each product you see in our catalog is made to order, which means once you place the order, we start working to get it to you. It takes time for us to create and send out the product but making each order on-demand allows us to avoid overproduction. This way we get to take care of you, and the planet we all share.
This is how we are going Green
Made to order
Every purchase, big or small, has a footprint. With each purchase, you have a choice. You choose the size of the mark to leave on the planet, and we want to help you choose wisely.
By choosing products that are made to order, you choose apparel that's created only as the order is placed, creating less fabric waste than conventional manufacturing.
With the precision-cut and hand-sewn after printing process, we produce only what is needed.
We also donate damaged and returned products to local charities, like the Red Cross, the American Kidney Fund, and Salvation Army.
Last year, our manufacturing partnered up with waste management services, such as Geocycle and Martex, to take care of fabric waste.
Many of our products are printed with the direct-to-garment (DTG) technique. With DTG, ink is sprayed onto the garment, which helps it soak better into the fabric and makes the print less prone to fading.
With the same DTG prints, we use Kornit machines and inks. Kornit uses high-quality, water-based vegan inks that they formulate, test, and produce in their own factories. Kornit inks are non-hazardous, toxin-free, biodegradable, and certified with an OEKO-TEX Eco Passport.
Quality you can rely on
The better the quality, the longer the product lasts. Before we add new products, we do durability, wash, and wear tests to make sure they’ll stand the test of time. Producing long-lasting products means reducing new purchases. We work with suppliers that produce high-quality products that last many washes, keeping print colors vibrant and the fabric soft.
Our eco-friendly product collection consists of items that are made of at least 30% sustainable, recycled, or biodegradable materials.
Since we’re seeing increased demand for eco-friendly products from our customers, we're happy to provide even more conscious fashion choices.
We now have a give back program where a portion of each sale is donated to one of our favorite environmental programs. This is how we’re fulfilling our goal of preserving and nurturing our planet. Currently our focus is protecting our reefs. The health of these natural resources worldwide are like the canary in a coal mine for the rest of the world’s oceans.
The Sustainable Collection
Recycled Polyester Fabric
Our Recycled High-Waisted Bikini is a unique product for Asana Hawai'i as it’s our first swimsuit made from recycled polyester. Take a minute to read about rPET:
What is recycled polyester?
Recycled polyester (rPET for short) is a fabric that’s produced from synthetic fibers. Recycled polyester is produced by recycling existing materials (like plastic bottles and packaging) but still has all the characteristics and performance as a regular polyester, making it a more sustainable fabric alternative.
How’s recycled polyester made?
Recycled polyester is made by crushing plastic products into small pieces. These small pieces are then processed into yarn, transformed into a fiber, and in the end—made into a fabric.
What are the advantages of recycled polyester?
Producing rPet takes 33% to 53% less energy than creating polyester from scratch. Also, rPet produces approximately 54.6% fewer CO2 emissions to the air than virgin polyester. By using recycled materials to make apparel like this Recycled High-Waisted Bikini, we are doing our part to reduce some of the plastic waste produced so it doesn’t end up in landfills.
ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX®
ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® is an independent certification system for chemicals, colourants and auxiliaries used in the textile and leather industry. During a multistep process, they analyze whether each individual ingredient in the chemical product meets the statutory requirements and that it is not harmful to human health. Both brands and manufacturers value the ECO PASSPORT as credible proof of sustainable textile and leather production.
What does the certificate state?
The certification system ECO PASSPORT is designed for manufacturers of process chemicals and chemical compounds. The textile chemicals certified in accordance with the ECO PASSPORT have been tested for harmful substances in critical concentrations as listed in the ECO PASSPORT standard. The label also gives transparent proof of which articles meet the criteria for ecologically responsible textile manufacturing. Once per year, OEKO-TEX® updates the banned substances and limit values and expands them to include new scientific findings or statutory requirements.
What Asana Hawai'i products are certified?
Currently our 100% organic cotton shirts are OEKO-TEX® Certified along with the Vegan inks used in the DTG printing process. We are expanding our Sustainable Collection throughout 2022 so stay tuned for more products being added.
